What is wild lettuce (Lactuca virosa)?
Wild lettuce is the wild bitter cousin of cultivated lettuce. Its dried white latex — called lactucarium — long served as a mild sedative in herbal traditions. According to Egyptian art, its use goes back to Ancient Egypt.
Is wild lettuce an opiate?
